gratitude-a-thon day 353: oscar fashion, the best and the worst of it

Yawn, yawn, yawn. Am I tired or just reminded of how boring the red carpet was last night. Not a whole lot of drool worthy dresses. In fact, E had unusually bizarre coverage last night and seemed not to have a lot of live interviews. Mani-cam, shmanni-cam, you need to give me the goods. But, resourceful girl that I am, I managed to find my way. And I watched until the end. And one more thing, I LOVE ELLEN DEGENERES EVEN MORE THAN I DID BEFORE THE SHOW, WHICH IS SAYING A LOT. She scored big, even though I hated her opening tux, although she made up for it with her Glinda dress. And now, on with the show.

The hate list

1. Liza Minelli

Somewhere over the rainbow of awful, was Liza. Kewpie doll lips, a streak of blue hair, and black orthopedic sneakers to top it all off. If you thought the “M” in “Liza with an M” was for “Minelli,” you were wrong, it was for miserable, which is what this get up made me feel like. Ellen hit the nail on the head with her witty dis, “There’s the best Liza Minelli impersonator in the audience that I’ve ever seen.” Good advertising for not getting plastic surgery, ladies.

2. Whoopi Goldberg

This is more like “Whoops, I’m wearing a cheaper, uglier, polyester-er version of Julia Roberts Globes disaster.” I know Whoopi doesn’t like to get dressed up, but jeez, a black garbage bag woulda been better than this thing. Her red striped stockings and ruby slippers paid tribute to the wicked witch of the West, who looked better dead under the house than Whoopi did last night.

3. Julia Roberts

Are you trying to tell us that you’ve put yourself in the category of Meryl Streep and that you are such a serious actress, that you just don’t care what you wear? I know Meryl, and believe you are no Meryl, Julia. So, what do you say we get ourselves a stylist and make an effort for  next award season? Or stay home and save our eyes from what we cannot unsee.

4. Anna Kendrick

There’s too much going on, and ALL OF IT’S UGLY.

-f9d99dd615a991b15. Anne Hathaway

If a war broke out at the Academy Awards last night, we’d have been safe, because Anne Hathaway had on armour and she could have fought the battle and won. Either that, or the troops would have recoiled from the sheer ugliness of that dress and unflattering hair.

And the best

1. Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita, Lupita, Lupita. She is like a piece of perfect. From her impeccable, modern, but classic style, which has been utterly flawless in every single photo I’ve seen of her, at every single event she’s been to, to her unblievably poised and lovely acceptance speech, this girl is just plain gorgeosity from head to heart.

2.Emma Watson

At 23, this girl is already shaping up to be quite the fashion forward fashionista. She’s looked really great at all the award shows this year. What I like is that she’s thoroughly modern in an understated and comfortable way. It doesn’t hurt that she’s just beautiful, but I really dig her style vibe. Harry Potter would have liked it, too because she  is definitely magic.

3. Charlize Theron

I wish the straps weren’t beige, but this dress is pretty fantastic. I love the bottom with the skinny underneath and see through top layer. That diamond she’s sporting is going to make her shoulders hurt in the morning, but hey, that’s what we do for fashion.

4. Kerry Washington

This might be what Olivia Pope would wear if she were going to pop, and we all know how flawless Olivia’s clothes are. Kerry has really given the bump a bump of fashion this season, and last night was no exception. She looks perfect and effortless. And by the way, I think it’s a girl.

kerry-washington-290 5. Camilla Alves

Probably not that easy to be the “other half” all the time, but Camilla has done the entire award season on the arm of the man of the moment, and still managed to shine more brightly. Although this seems to steal a page from Lupita’s stunning Globes Ralph Lauren dress, I think it’s pretty special. It’s simple, but regal and modern at the same time. And the color is perfect with her skin tone.

And so award season ends with kind of a fizzle. This show did not knock my sox off in terms of fashion moments. Sandra looked fine, but not exceptional. Meryl delivered the expected dowdy. Amy Adams looked ok, but not great. And now, I’m going back to bed.

gratitutde-a-thon day 352: the oscar breakdown according to me

Unknown-4

I’m not sure why I think this is so funny, since it doesn’t have dogs, but it’s cracking me up here on a Sunday morning, during an epic hangover. And even though my head feels as large as the expansive screen that I saw Gravity on, I am in a great mood because it’s FASHION ALERT, the Oscars! I have so much to do to get ready, my hair, makeup, my dress, OHGOSH, I forgot, I’m not actually going. But be sure, I will be watching every red carpet moment from my den, texting my sister. As I said yesterday, I’ve now seen all ten best picture nominees. So, here’s how I wish it were going to go, and how i think it will likely go.

  • Best Picture Nominees
  • American Hustle
  • Dallas Buyers Club
  • Wolf of Wall Street
  • Philomena
  • Her
  • Captain Philips
  • Gravity
  • Nebraska
  • 12 Years a Slave

Will Win:

12 Years a Slave is an important story. It’s beautifully crafted, filmed, and told. Chiwetel Ejiofor is amazing in his performance , as is the new fashion superstar of the world, Lupita Nuong ‘o.  But I know this story. And while I think everybody should know this history, I found it preposterously painful to watch, and in some ways wish I hadn’t watched it. But I think it will win.

Should Win:

What I would choose if I were voting, would be Her. It’s rich, complex, intelligent and oddly believable. Scarlett Johanssen, who is never shown on screen creates an amazingly full bodied character. The futuristic setting is thoroughly realistic, different enough, but not sic-fi wacky. This movie examines what a relationship consists of, what we need and don’t need. It’s inventive and original, and I would love to see it win. I am also in love with Nebraska. A small story simply told. Gorgeous.

Best Actor

  • Christian Bale
  • Bruce Dern
  • Leonardo DiCaprio
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor
  • Matthew McConaughey

Will Win:

Matthew McConaughey has always irritated me. I’ve never thought of him as a heart throb, never considered his movie choices worthy of seeing. But he blew me way, way AWAY in his role in Dallas Buyers Club, and it wasn’t just his insane weight loss, he offered a rich performance with the right amount of swagger and depth. Statue.

Should Win:

I think McConaughey should win, but I loved Christian Bale’s performance in American Hustle. He was wholly convincing as a swarthy con man. Brilliant. And Bruce Dern gave a subtle and nuanced performance in Nebraska that broke my heart. This is a really tough race, but ultimately I think McConaughey will walk away with it, and likely should.

Best Actress

  • Amy Adams
  • Cate Blanchett
  • Sandra Bullock
  • Judi Dench
  • Meryl Street

Will Win:

Amy Adams and Cate Blanchett are going to battle this one out. I had never seen either of them portray someone so thoroughly or convincingly. This was a whole different side of both of these actresses. They both surprised me. I’m not sure who gets the little guy tonight, but the race is between these two.

Should Win:

I was all Amy Adams until I saw Meryl in August: Osage County. People say she was hammy, but I thought she was extraordinary. And Blanchett shocked me in her convincing portrayal. I don’t even know who I’m rooting for, but I actually think it’s the underdog, Meryl.

Best Supporting Actor

  • Barkhad Abdi
  • Bradley Cooper
  • Michael Fassbinder
  • Jonah Hill
  • Jared Leto

Will Win:

Jared Leto as the heart breaking transgender character with Aids in Dallas Buyers Club is just a simply  beautiful performance. His transformation aside, I found his screen time captivating. I think he gets to stroll onto the stage tonight.

Should Win: I think Jared is the right guy for the job.

Best Supporting Actress

  • Sally Hawkins
  • Jennifer Lawrence
  • Lupita Nyong’o
  • Julia Roberts
  • June Squibb

Will Win:

I think that Jennifer Lawrence will walk away with more hardware tonight. I liked her a lot. But at the same time, I didn’t think she was necessarily stellar. She is always an actor who draws you in, but not sure this is deservant of an Oscar, nonetheless, I think tonight will be her night.

Should Win:

I thought June Squibb’s long suffering, sassy senior citizen with the alcoholic husband in Nebraska was really phenomenal. I loved Lupita, but I gotta say, June is it for me.

Best Director

Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
Alexander Payne, Nebraska
David O. Russell, American Hustle
Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street

Will Win:

I think this race is between Steve McQueen and David O. Russell. I’m not sure who will get it, but I’m pretty sure this is the match up.

Should Win:

I think Her should have been in this category. Also, I loved Nebraska so much. The direction was spot on. I’m sort of confused on this one. I don’t know. It’s an interesting race.

And there you have it. See you tomorrow, when I will have a full fashion re-cap! Off to get ready. Dangnabit, I forgot I’m not going again.

gratitude-a-thon day 351: the upside of winter

Unknown-2

Although it’s been colder than a teenager girl’s stare, icier than that Ben & Jerry’s hiding in the back of your freezer since sometime in the 80’s, snowier than Mount Baker (which, in 1998 had 1, 140 inches of snow in case you want to get all technical and fact checky), and in general suckier than any other winter I can remember, the one and only good thing that’s happened during this frigid and altogther intolerable meteorologic misery, is that, as of last night,  I have seen all ten of the Academy Award nominated movies! And wow, is there some good film out there.
